The William Hafner Company was established in 1901. One of the most succesfull products was the ''Roundabout'', an open air keywind toy car. In 1905 Hafner started a partnership with William Ogden Coleman and the name of the company was now called American Flyer Manufacturing Company. Hafner left the company after a dispute with Coleman in 1914 and started the Hafner Manufacturing Company at the same time. The Hafner Overland Flyer became his most famous engine in these years. The advertising budget was quite low and therefore catalogs are extreme rare today. Hafner's dedication to quality kept the company going through the 1920's, the Depression and WWII. Hafner also expanded its productline to include auto accesories, lawn chairs and Christmas tree holders. During WWII the Hafner products were distributed overseas by Lionel. Lionel made only electrical trains and Hafner limited their line to clockwork trains. William Hafner was retired in 1942 and his son John Hafner took over the company. In the late 1940's Hafner was merged with a plastic manufacturer Wallace Erickson. This was however unsuccesfull, leading into a takeover bu the All Metal Company in 1951. This company went into bankruptcy in 1956 and the tools and dies were sold to Louis Marx, who shipped them to his plants in Mexico. |
